LNQ’s facilities and resources are available to the wider community to provide a
range of services through its Head Office and its networked Centres. The facilities
include but are not limited to the following:
LNQ has facilities in its Centres across Queensland that are available for hire by organisations and businesses:
- Networked computer facilities with high speed internet access
- High quality printing services
- Scanners and CD burning facilities
- ISDN video conferencing facilities
- IP based voice, video and data conferencing facilities
- Teleconferencing facilities
- Access to a Helpdesk during business hours covering basic hardware and MS-Office
As well as the above facilities Brisbane Head Office can offer:
- Large room-based web and videoconferencing system (for approximately 50 people)
- Access to web-conferencing technology, allowing for wide information delivery
- Computer lab for training (24 computers)
- Enhanced internet facilities available
- Hosting of remote online materials, websites and other data as required
- Examination management and facilities
LNQ also supports distance education students and can offer learning
institutions the following services:
- Local tutorial space (visiting lecturers)
- Extended hours of access (24 hours in some centres)
- Quiet study facilities
- Access to University bridging Courses (Unilearn) to assist and support students in building appropriate study skills
In addition to the fixed Centres, LNQ has 17 “Mobile Laptop Labs” each consisting of
- 5 laptop computers
- a small printer
- and a router that provides internet access
The solution uses wireless Ethernet technology to simplify setup and minimise cabling.
It is designed to be used anywhere that has access to a 240 volt power supply and a
standard telephone connection. Each laptop lab connects to the internet using a 56K dial-up modem.
LNQ is currently planning to upgrade these connections by leveraging off the new Telstra NextG
network to obtain wireless connections at broadband speeds. This should allow the laptop labs to be
used in even more remote locations, provide better internet connectivity and allow access to LNQ’s
Centra conferencing services.
Coordinators and staff across the network are also available to:
- support students in a mentoring role (non-academic), helping to address feelings of isolation through personal interaction
- play a role in student community building, for example, assisting students in organising local study groups and provision of facilities
- support students with admin and basic IT issues
- assist with pro-active student retention strategies
- invigilate tertiary examinations
- support and assist community organisations to meet their IT and training needs through partnered funding applications
